Stable website operation is the foundation of a successful online business, e-commerce store, or corporate resource. Even a brief downtime can lead to customer loss, decreased search rankings, and financial damage. That’s why regular website checks and server health monitoring are essential for every website owner.

Modern server monitoring allows you not only to notice issues on time but also to prevent them before the site becomes inaccessible to users. Monitoring systems automatically check website availability, track uptime, analyze server response times, and alert you to potential overload risks.

For many, it is crucial to be able to check website availability at any time—especially if the resource operates 24/7 and serves clients from multiple countries. Regular website reliability checks help maintain high service quality and ensure stable server uptime.

In this article, we will explore what website and server monitoring is, which metrics need to be tracked, and how to choose hosting with a reliable notification system and support.

What is Website and Server Monitoring?

Website and server monitoring is the regular oversight of a web resource’s availability and the stability of its server infrastructure. It helps detect failures in time, maintain high uptime, and ensure quick responses to hosting or network issues. With this approach, website checks and server monitoring become vital tools for maintaining reliable online project operation.

Availability Monitoring (Uptime Monitoring)

Website availability monitoring (uptime monitoring) is a key element of ensuring a web resource runs smoothly. Its main task is continuous checking of the site’s availability and timely detection of situations when the website becomes inaccessible to users.

These systems perform automatic checks at set intervals—for example, every 1, 5, or 10 minutes. If the server does not respond or the page fails to load, the monitoring records the failure and instantly sends an alert to the site owner.

An important advantage of uptime monitoring is that checks are performed from multiple locations worldwide. This allows you to verify website accessibility not only locally but also for visitors from other countries. Sometimes a website may work in one region but be unavailable in another due to network or server issues.

Regular server uptime control helps maintain high availability, avoid prolonged downtime, and ensure uninterrupted operation of an online business.

Performance Monitoring (Server Response Speed)

Website performance monitoring involves checking how quickly the server processes requests and delivers pages to users. One of the key metrics here is server response time, measured in milliseconds, which shows how fast the website responds to browser requests.

Even if a site passes the availability check, slow server response can make users feel the site is “lagging” or unstable. That’s why it’s important not only to verify availability but also to regularly assess performance.

Page loading speed directly affects:

  • SEO – Google considers site speed as a ranking factor, so slow pages can lose search positions.
  • Conversion – the longer the site takes to load, the more visitors leave before the page opens.
  • Server uptime – overloads or delays can be early signs of future failures.

Regular performance monitoring is an important part of website reliability checks, helping maintain stable server uptime and user comfort.

Server Resource Monitoring (CPU, RAM, Disk)

Another crucial aspect of server monitoring is tracking the use of main resources: CPU, RAM, and disk space. These metrics determine how well the server handles load and whether the site can operate without interruptions.

If the CPU is constantly overloaded, the server processes requests more slowly, reducing page load speed. Lack of RAM can cause freezes, site errors, or even emergency restarts. A full disk often prevents system updates, backup storage, or proper database functioning.

Regular website checks should include these metrics, as exceeding resource limits risks site downtime and lower server uptime. Therefore, monitoring CPU, RAM, and disk is an essential part of website reliability checks and maintaining stable online project operation.

Security Monitoring (SSL, Certificates, DDoS)

In addition to availability and performance, server security monitoring is essential. Even a stable site can suddenly become inaccessible due to network attacks or certificate issues.

One key aspect is checking SSL certificate validity. If the certificate expires, browsers display warnings about unsafe connections, drastically reducing visitor trust and potentially harming SEO. Regular website checks should therefore include SSL validity monitoring.

Monitoring systems can also detect suspicious activity: sudden spikes in requests, unauthorized access attempts, login errors, or unusual load. This enables prompt action before these issues affect server uptime.

Special attention should be given to DDoS protection, which can overload servers and cause site crashes. In such cases, it is important not only to check website availability but also to have tools for automatic attack blocking and rapid support.

Security monitoring is a mandatory component of website reliability checks, helping maintain stable uptime and protect user data.

Why is Regular Website Availability Checking Important?

Regular website availability checks are not just a formality—they are key to stable operation and user safety. Even brief downtime can result in lost visitors, reduced conversion rates, and lower search rankings.

A critical aspect is monitoring SSL certificate expiry. Expired certificates trigger browser warnings, reduce user trust, and can negatively impact SEO. Regular checks allow timely updates, maintaining secure connections.

Regular monitoring also helps detect suspicious activity, such as unauthorized access attempts or abnormal server load. This allows preventing issues before they cause site downtime or data loss.

Preventive measures against attacks like DDoS are also important. Monitoring systems alert to traffic spikes from suspicious sources, enabling quick responses and server protection.

Thus, regular website reliability checks ensure stable server uptime, user security, and trust in your online business.

Key Monitoring Metrics

Key Monitoring Metrics

To keep a site stable and maintain high server uptime, it is not enough to just check if the page loads. It is necessary to regularly track key technical metrics that affect speed, reliability, and security.

The main monitoring metrics include uptime, server response time, HTTP statuses, resource load, and SSL certificate validity. Tracking these allows timely detection of issues, prevents server overload, and addresses security problems.

Regular monitoring of these metrics is the foundation of website reliability checks and ensures uninterrupted online project operation.

Uptime

Uptime measures website or server availability, indicating the proportion of time the resource works without interruptions. For example, 99% uptime means the site was available 99% of the time, with 1% downtime due to failures or maintenance.

To understand the real impact over a year:

  • 99% uptime – approximately 3.65 days of downtime per year
  • 99.9% uptime – about 8.76 hours of downtime per year
  • 99.99% uptime – only 52.56 minutes of downtime per year
  • 99.999% uptime – approximately 5 minutes 15 seconds of downtime per year

The Atman data center provides high availability (99.999% uptime), featuring fully redundant infrastructure: backup critical components, multi-level power systems, optimized cooling, and 24/7 monitoring. Such uptime guarantees business continuity and stable services for clients.

Even small improvements in uptime significantly reduce periods when users cannot access the site. High server uptime ensures convenience for visitors and reliable business operation, especially for e-commerce and 24/7 services.

Regular availability checks help monitor uptime and quickly respond to issues, ensuring maximum resource reliability.

Server Response Time

Server response time indicates how long the server takes to process a user request and deliver the first response. It is a key performance metric affecting page load speed, SEO, and conversion.

Optimal response times for a well-optimized site are usually 100–300 milliseconds. Response times exceeding 500–1000 ms can cause noticeable delays for users and may reduce search engine rankings.

Factors increasing response time include:

  • High CPU or RAM load
  • Network bandwidth limits or connection issues
  • Poorly optimized databases or heavy queries
  • High simultaneous visitor counts without scaling
  • Heavy scripts, plugins, or third-party services

Regular server monitoring and website reliability checks help track response time, identify bottlenecks, and maintain stable uptime even under high load.

HTTP Statuses

HTTP statuses are codes sent by the server in response to user requests. They allow quick assessment of website health and detection of issues during availability checks.

Key codes to monitor:

  • 200 OK – page loaded successfully, indicating proper site operation.
  • 301 Moved Permanently – page permanently redirected, used for SEO and site structure.
  • 404 Not Found – requested page not found; numerous 404s indicate broken links or structural errors.
  • 500 Internal Server Error – server-side issue, indicating problems with scripts, server, or database.

Tracking HTTP statuses allows quick reaction to errors, prevents traffic loss, and maintains high server uptime—a fundamental metric for website stability and reliability.

Server Load

Server load reflects how actively resources are used—CPU, RAM, and disk. Overload negatively affects speed and stability.

Symptoms of overload include:

  • Slow page loading even with normal uptime
  • Increased server response time
  • 500 errors or other failures

Consider scaling your plan or increasing resources if:

  • Your site regularly receives more traffic than the current plan allows
  • Recurring traffic peaks cause delays
  • New features, integrations, or databases are being launched requiring extra resources

Regular server monitoring and website reliability checks help track load, prevent failures, and maintain uptime even during peak periods.

SSL Certificate Validity

Monitoring SSL certificate expiry is a critical part of server monitoring and website reliability checks. SSL encrypts data between server and user, builds trust, and impacts SEO.

Expired certificates cause browser warnings, leading to:

  • Visitor and potential client loss
  • Reduced conversion in e-commerce or online services
  • Lower search rankings

Regular checks ensure timely certificate renewal, maintaining uptime and user data security—a simple but essential step for stable online operations.

This approach ensures maximum control, maintains high uptime, and makes reliability checks more effective even for complex corporate or commercial projects.

What to Do if the Website is Down?

What to Do if the Website is Down?

If a site check reveals that the resource is inaccessible, it is important to act systematically to quickly restore operation. Here’s a brief action plan:

  1. Check from different devices and networks – try opening the site on another computer, smartphone, or through different ISPs to determine if the problem is local or global.
  2. Error analysis – note the error code or browser message. 404 indicates a missing page, 500 indicates a server error.
  3. Domain and DNS check – ensure the domain is active and DNS records are correctly configured. Domain issues or expiry can make the site inaccessible.
  4. Contact hosting support – if self-checks are insufficient, reach out to support. They can verify server status, restore access, or provide scaling recommendations.

Following this plan helps respond quickly to failures, maintain uptime, and minimize visitor and revenue loss.

How to Choose Hosting with Reliable Monitoring?

When choosing hosting, ensure the provider offers not only basic uptime checks but also comprehensive server monitoring. This affects stability, data security, and overall uptime—especially for e-commerce, portals, or high-traffic sites.

Key factors to consider:

SLA (Service Level Agreement). Guarantees the provider’s commitment to availability. A high SLA (e.g., 99.9% or higher) ensures stable uptime and potential compensation for prolonged downtime.

Uptime Guarantee. Verify real server uptime, not just promises. Higher uptime means fewer service interruptions.

Backup. Regular backups help restore the site after technical issues or update errors.

24/7 Support. Round-the-clock support ensures quick resolution of unexpected issues, from downtime to suspicious activity.

Notification System. Good hosting offers internal monitoring and fast alerts for downtime, resource overloads, or SSL expiry, enabling immediate action.

For example, in Hostpark, clients can install agents for regular website checks and technical parameter monitoring. This provides uptime data, log access, resource usage stats, and support to optimize your site and avoid downtime efficiently.

Relocating a data center to another facility within Ukraine was already a challenging task even in peacetime. Moving it abroad, and under wartime conditions, was an even greater challenge. However, thanks to the Hostpark team, we were able to complete this process as smoothly and painlessly as possible. UNIVERSAL BANK is a major Ukrainian retail bank. Nearly 10 million citizens of Ukraine are our clients and loyal users of our mobile application, monobank. Ensuring uninterrupted access to our customers’ funds has always been our highest priority. However, with the onset of the full-scale war, fulfilling this task became extremely difficult — all of our data centers were located within Ukraine and were exposed to significant risks. As a result, a decision was made to quickly establish a fully operational data center within the European Union, using the network and server equipment already at our disposal. To accomplish this task, we required a competent partner with experience operating both in Ukraine and in the EU — and such a partner for us was HOSTPARK. The teams of UNIVERSAL BANK and HOSTPARK carefully developed a plan to relocate part of the Bank’s critical IT infrastructure from Ukraine to the EU, selected a suitable location for the equipment within the EU, resolved all related customs and organizational matters in both Ukraine and the EU, and successfully executed the migration plan while avoiding downtime and maintaining full control over the process. Currently, our equipment is hosted in one of the EU countries in a specialized data center that meets the highest industry standards. Our data centers in Ukraine and the EU are connected via high-capacity data transmission channels (with HOSTPARK once again acting as one of the providers). Over an extended period of operation, we have proven the reliability of this infrastructure in practice. We would also like to highlight the continuous support provided — we were always in close contact with the HOSTPARK team, and all issues were resolved promptly and professionally. We sincerely recommend HOSTPARK as a reliable partner for organizations seeking to ensure the highest level of stability and security for their IT infrastructure.

Yours sincerely,
Acting Chairman of the Management Board
